Central Demolition Ltd were awarded the contract for the demolition and asbestos removal of the former leisure centre on the Irvine Harbourside. The facilities included swimming pools and an ice rink inside concrete and steel structures. We completed the project in May 2018.
Firstly, this project required some preparatory work before we could begin the demolition of the structures. This included soft stripping of the buildings and a road closure as the removal of the access bridge over the main road was a crucial part of this project. We also removed asbestos from the building before the demolition commenced which mainly consisted of a large amount of non-licenced material and some licensed material.
The demolition was carried out by machine of all large structures which were concrete and steel built. We also carried out the grubbing out of the swimming pool and ice rink, including the underground cooling systems and pipe work.
The demolition of the concrete access bridge was also carried out through machine demolition but we had to ensure road closures and diversions were carried out prior to this as the bridge was located over the main public thoroughfare.
The other works that we carried out on this project were the topsoiling of the site area and grass seeding which we carried out in May 2018 after the main works finished in December 2017.
The recycling rate on this project finished at 95% and concrete was crushed onsite and used for infilling and levelling the site.
This work generated a lot of interest from the media and the public so we had to ensure our work, as usual, was carried out to the highest standard of professionalism. There was also some significant risks with this project, which mainly came from the licensed asbestos materials and the access bridge removal over the roadway. However these risks were managed as we adhered to our method statement and a professional health & safety programme.
The project was completed on time and to complete client satisfaction.
