Central Demolition Limited were awarded the contract for the demolition of St Brides Primary School, a 3 storey sandstone school building with slate roof.
When we began our works on site, we undertook asbestos removal which involved removing both licensed and non-notifiable asbestos. The works included the licensed removal of a pipe in duct in the boiler room and the removal of non-notifiable materials within the building. All work was undertaken by one of our fully trained and experienced asbestos teams, who were inducted and prioritised health and safety at all times.
Prior to the demolition of the school, some other preparatory work was required. All rooms were soft stripped of materials and the slate was removed from the roof.
The demolition involved the use of a machine to demolish the building. Another machine was deployed to load the rubble into tippers for removal off site. All voids were backfilled. All waste was transferred from site to our Bonnybridge yard, where it was recycled as far as possible with any non-recyclable waste being disposed of responsibly.
One of the challenges faced during this project was the fact that there were other contractors at the far end of the site (ground workers) so communication was key throughout the demolition works. Also, there were challenges with regards to obtaining correct approval for removal of the slate from the roof. We explored several different options before a suitable method was agreed – cherry picker and telehandler.
This was a very successful project which was delivered safely, on time and within budget. Our clients, Kier Construction, subsequently provided Central Demolition with a glowing reference. Richard Molyneux, Kier’s Project Manager for Scotland, wrote:
